The tennis world may not be as attractive as it used to be, but looking at thepreferablySneakers of the year, wouldn't you know. Awash in a sea of weird square fingersMautiere, shiny chain linkmoccasins, and pointed, ready for the stageStiefel, they still managed to pique our interest – and as a result, something strange happened: the Tennis Industrial Complex looked more exciting than ever. With less rubbish to sift through week after week, crème de la crème rose to the top faster than before.

At one end of the spectrum were Capital D's designers, who made massive, culture-shattering pivots (think of Gucci's deliciously wacky association with, well,no) and collaborations that once only existed in our dreams (see:Nike x Louis Vuitton). On the other hand, big names like New Balance and Jordan have found new ways to make us fall in love with the silhouettes that made them powerhouses simply by giving people what they want: retro colors and classic style. And all the while, less established players were surprising, whether it was the obsessive French gorps at Salomon or the Japanese fans atAsics, which churned out hit after hit to solidify their status in an increasingly saturated market.
