CARMICHAEL (CBS13) - It's a new twist in the fight against a devastating disease: table tennis therapy.

Hardly any sport trains the brain as much as table tennis.

The blows are coming at a fast pace for members of the Sacramento Table Tennis Club. But even if they fall short, they're perfect when it comes to engaging in an activity that experts say forces the brain to work a little harder, lowering our risk of developing dementia or Alzheimer's disease.

"All of this in turn increases oxygen levels, improves hand-eye coordination, and helps the brain create these pathways," said dementia expert Dr. Teri Pluma.

Game theory may actually enlarge a part of the brain that is shrinking in Alzheimer's and dementia sufferers.

In fact, researchers have discovered that it activates five different areas of the brain at once.

Picking up a racket is a piece of cake for older players like Kenneth Renfrow, who has the court in the rec room at Eskaton Village Carmichael Retirement Center.

"I think that's one of the benefits of table tennis in particular and being active in general," he said.

Researchers also say it can reduce an Alzheimer's patient's reliance on medications.

That's more than good news when you consider that more than 5.4 million people in the country have Alzheimer's disease, while more than 200,000 have what is known as juvenile Alzheimer's disease, some of whom are barely 40 years.

It may be the last thing on the minds of younger players, but for others it's very important as they try to put their own spin on the aging process in hopes of a net gain against disease.
